Dear Me,

This month’s Writer’s group writing prompt that I chose was: Write a letter to your younger self. what would you like him to know?

Dear self,

Oh what a time we’ve had. I’m not sure when you will get this letter, time travel being what it is, but either way it’s time you learned some of the wisdom that I’ve gleaned from years of trying, making mistakes, succeeding, failing and just doing. You know, you’re going to turn out okay.

You’ll get to do a lot of the things you’re dreaming of doing. You’ll find the love of your life…eventually… so don’t get disheartened, not everyone marries in their 20’s. Spoiler alert, you’ll be 39. You’ll have a child, a son, who turns out quite well, gets married and… Well, I’m still waiting for the letter from my future self to find out where that goes.

The best advice I can give to you is just keep trying. Don’t let people say that you can’t do something, maybe except riding a unicycle. Don’t let people say that what you are doing has no purpose. Enjoy what you want to learn whether there is any point in what you are doing or not. Don’t be afraid, except maybe of roller coasters, they are scary. That doesn’t mean don’t fear. There are things in this world that you will be concerned about. Just don’t let that fear be your only guiding force.

Try not to get angry. Use humor when appropriate to diffuse issues. Be silent when being quiet is needed. Listen at all times. Things that you hear whether it be spoken words or sounds of nature will help form you. Always be there for those that need you. Don’t let fads and technology be your only way of life.

Definitely keep listening to the music you love and take lots of pictures. Memories are great images to keep. But as you get older you might need some triggers to help jump start those mind pictures.

And most of all. Keep writing. The time will come when you won’t be able to share things with others and even yourself. Let your writing be there to speak for you.

You have a long productive way to go. Enjoy it. Let me know if you need the address of someone to be with. I happen to know this girl and maybe I can get you two together before you turn 39. I think you’ll like her.

About hdh

I have been telling stories for over 40 years and writing forever. I am a retired teacher and storyteller. I hope to expand upon my repertoire and use this blog as a place to do writing. The main purpose is to give me and others that choose to comment, a space in which to play with issues that deal with storytelling, storytelling ideas, storytelling in education, reactions to events, and just plain fun stories. I explore some of my own writing throughout, from character analysis, to fictional, to poetry, and personal stories. I go wherever my muse sends me. Enjoy!
